Classic Editor

Classic Editor is an official plugin maintained by the WordPress team that restores the previous (“classic”) WordPress editor and the “Edit Post” screen. It makes it possible to use plugins that extend that screen, add old-style meta boxes, or otherwise depend on the previous editor.

Classic Editor is an official WordPress plugin, and will be fully supported and maintained until at least 2022, or as long as is necessary.

By default, this plugin hides all functionality available in the new Block Editor (“Gutenberg”).

  • Configuració de l'administrador a la pantalla Configuració -> Pantalla d'escriptura.
  • Network settings to select the default editor for the network and allow site admins to change it.
  • The "Switch to Classic Editor" link.

Default settings

When activated this plugin will restore the previous (“classic”) WordPress editor and hide the new Block Editor (“Gutenberg”).
These settings can be changed at the Settings => Writing screen.

Default settings for network installation

There are two options:

  • When network-activated this plugin will set the Classic Editor as default and prevent site administrators and users from changing editors.
The settings can be changed and default network-wide editor can be selected on the Network Settings screen.
  • When not network-activated each site administrator will be able to activate the plugin and choose options for their users.
Cannot find the “Switch to Classic Editor” link

It is in the main Block Editor menu, see this screenshot.

Allthoug I was really excited about the Gutenberg update.... on paper .. . it turns out to be pain to use in the real world. My god, how inconvenient and complicated it turned out to be. Luckily the old and very dated, but easy and great working editor is still available through this plugin.

Hello guys! You really saved the entire world. The scale of WordPress is giant and if you didn't create this plugin a big crisis would arise. Thank you very much!

Although we are enthusiastic about the future of Gutenberg, the combination of the Classic Editor and Beaver Builder gives us all of the flexibility we need in page layouts. When we are able to verify Gutenberg provides all of the same functions (including the customizations for which we use TinyMCE and custom style drop downs), we'll be ready to switch. In the meantime, thank's so much for sustaining this through at least 2022.

I have built websites with WordPress since 2005. I just had a new one to build, and it was one where blocks might be useful so I thought I'd give Gutenberg another try. But no: still slow, fiddly, buggy and just too hard to use. I get that it's more efficient in database terms for big high-traffic sites, but those aren't mine. For me, usability and human time saved is more important, and the Classic Editor plugin delivers those. I have yet to have a single customer react to the Gutenberg interface with anything but horror, so I am very glad to have Classic Editor to save me! Thank you!
