Force Reinstall

Ever had an update break in the middle or simply not sure if your plugins are still intact after malware removal or maybe just something else?

Then you have come across the correct plugin, just click Force Reinstall and plugin will set the plugin or theme as needing an update thus forcing WordPress to update the plugin or theme.

This is only temporarily set and is reset when you visit the updates page or update a single plugin/theme so you don’t have to worry about any plugin or theme files being manipulated

Automatic installation

Automatic installation is the easiest option — WordPress will handle the file transfer, and you won’t need to leave your web browser. To do an automatic install of Force Reinstall, log in to your WordPress dashboard, navigate to the Plugins menu, and click “Add New.”

In the search field type “Force Reinstall”, then click “Search Plugins.” Once you’ve found us, you can view details about it such as the point release, rating, and description. Most importantly of course, you can install it by! Clicking “Install Now,” and WordPress will take it from there.

Manual installation

  1. Upload force-reinstall.php to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress

What it if I change my mind?

Simple, WordPress will refresh plugin and theme versions when you visit the updates page or update at least one.

Why do some plugins/themes not have a reinstall option?

Most probably they do not have a download link and where probably manually installed and ending up having a different link than what is available from

Will my data be affected

No. This will just effectively force WordPress to replace plugin or theme files only, nothing else.

I reinstalled all my plugins using the plugin. Reinstallation is done in two steps: Force reinstallation on the plugins page and then you have to go to the dashboard update page and start the updates which will do a reinstall for the previously marked plugins. Very clever solution.

I really like this plugin. Simple to use. Practical. Useful when needed. Time saver. Thanks to the developer.

For some reason, the Sucuri function that does this, would not work, especially on localhost. This plugin did the trick for free/repo-based plugins. I tested it by placing random comments in plugin files, and random files in the plugin's folder(s), and the force re-install removed all of it. This means that it overwrites the entire plugin, and does not just replace files one-by-one. Nice. Use this in bulk mode, to get the normal WP Dashboard feedback.

I've installed the plugin and tried to force reinstallation for some plugin. There were no visual feedback to say if the reinstallation process worked. Also, I checked the files and they had not change. I wanted the plugin to work and give a positive review. I finally used Sucuri Security to reinstall the plugins and it worked flawlessly. I hope this feedback helps you make it better. I will revisit and adjust my review if you fix it. Thank you for your work even if it did not help in my case.
